Introducing Alaska’s only public glassblowing studio where visitors and residents alike can blow their own glass art!
While there are a few private glassblowing studios in the Last
Frontier, none are as open to the public or nestled in
a more beautiful spot than Garden City Glassworks in Skagway.
Alaska’s
newest ‘Hot Shop’ sits at the base of an impressive rock wall amid the
beauty of Jewell Gardens, arguably the
state’s most impressive show garden. About a mile from town, the
Gardens are a welcome retreat from the busy-ness of downtown Skagway
which can see up to 10,000 cruise ship visitors per day in the summer
season.
This
exciting project was inspired by the ‘Gardens & Glass’ series of
installations by renowned Northwest glass artist Dale Chihuly. The
color and organic form of hand blown glass art is the perfect
complement to nature’s own dizzying
display of color and form in the Garden.
Garden
visitors are able to either watch the mesmerizing process of
glassblowing, or can even try it themselves. Garden City Glassworks
ships the finished product home for clients at no extra cost once
they’ve cooled the next day.
For 2008 we are proud to offer two exciting glassblowing programs to be sold exclusively aboard the cruise ships calling
in Skagway. If you are arriving by ship and wish to make reservations
for either of these tours, please check with your cruise line for
booking information.
Our
most exclusive offering affords a very limited number of participants
the rare opportunity to actually work with our glass artists in the Hot
Shop to create their own piece. Guests have the chance to choose their
colors and design, and actually blow their own simple ornament or glass
float – they even have the chance to add real gold for spectacular
effect!
Our second offering to
cruise visitors is a brand new theater-style glassblowing demonstration
that will be incorporated to many of the Jewell Garden guided tour
programs that are sold aboard the cruise ships in 2008. This 30 minute
show will feature one of our talented glass artists explaining and
demonstrating the fascinating process of working with molten glass. Please visit our Cruise Passenger Information page for more details.
While
no formal glassblowing programs are planned for independent travelers,
all Jewell Gardens visitors will have the chance to see glassblowing in
action when our artists are at work in the Hot Shop. Please visit our Independent Traveler page for more information.
